Overview:
Reading time: 2 minutes.
Content Summary: This page outlines the accessibility principles and practices guiding the AI accessibility research project, including commitments to plain language, assistive technology compatibility, privacy considerations, and ongoing feedback to ensure inclusivity throughout the project.
Accessibility is at the heart of this project, and I am committed to ensuring that this website and all related content meet high standards of usability and inclusivity.
My name is Kay Slater and I work as the Exhibitions and Accessibility Manager at grunt gallery. I am leading and authoring this research. I will use first-person language to share my process and learnings and acknowledge that a human, not an institution, is writing this, which means I’ll sometimes be wrong. I may publish an opinion not shared by grunt gallery, including its staff, board, and exhibiting artists. However, I am a part of the grunt gallery team, and my team supports this work. I will work to share and learn alongside other artists employed by or hosted by the gallery throughout the year, and the final published report will be fact-checked and edited by other team members.
Below, I outline the principles and practices guiding accessibility for this project.
My Accessibility Commitments
- Plain Language: This website’s content is written at a grade 9 reading level to ensure clarity and comprehension. I am using the Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level test.
- Screen Reader and Speech-to-Text Compatibility: All website content is designed to prioritize screen readers and other assistive technologies.
- English Text: All materials will be presented in English, and audio or video media will include English captions or transcripts at minimum. This is an English-language project, although translations into other visual or spoken/written languages may be explored adjacent to this work.
- Visual Descriptions: Images and videos generated or photographed during this project will include detailed visual descriptions to provide meaningful access to users with visual impairments.
- Plain Text Content: No PDFs will be used. Any external text content will be quoted directly in HTML on the website or made available as plain text files for ease of access.
Privacy and AI Considerations
This project is committed to respecting privacy while navigating the evolving legal and ethical frameworks around AI. While I strive to adhere to Canadian privacy laws, please be aware that some tools used in this project may process data on servers located in countries without equivalent privacy protections.
If you have privacy concerns, I recommend avoiding using this website and subscribing to the newsletter or waiting for the final project findings, which will be released in December 2025.
For more details on privacy, please see this website’s Privacy Policy.
Feedback and Questions
Accessibility is an ongoing process, and your feedback is very valuable. If you encounter any accessibility issues or have suggestions for improvement, please email me at access@grunt.ca. Your input will help prioritize accessibility improvements in this project.
This Accessibility Statement will be updated as the project progresses and will be based on feedback from users and collaborators. Thank you for supporting this initiative to make the arts more inclusive for everyone.
